1. Focusing Too Much On Yourself
In communication, you get what you give. The less attention you give to people, the less attention people will pay to you. Train yourself to be a better listener and you will find yourself giving better responses thus making people more interested in talking to you.
Ever felt annoyed by someone who was using their phone or doing something else while you were talking to them? People feel the same way if you do it to them. It is rude and unprofessional so learn to focus on people. If they are too boring, either introduce something interesting into the conversation or politely excuse yourself.
3. Waiting, Not Listening
When you think you have a good response, you tend to wait for your turn to speak so that you can say it. This is not entirely bad but most people stop listening when they do this. When you stop listening, you will fail to fully understand what the other person is trying to tell you.
Unless you’re in a timed debate, there is no need for you to interrupt someone while they are speaking. It will make you seem disrespectful and impatient thus making people avoid you for future conversations.
5. Not Being Straightforward
You ask someone “Where do you live?” and they start explaining how they prefer living in cities instead of rural areas while also telling you about their favourite malls around the place they live. Eventually, you will get annoyed and ask them to get to the point and just answer your question.
6. Being Too Passive or Too Aggressive
If you are too quiet and always wait for people to speak first, people will find you boring. If you are too chatty and always want to say something, people will find you annoying. Balance your involvement in conversations. Remember the 75% Listening and 25% Speaking rule.
Simple phrases and words like “Thank you”, “Please” and “It was nice talking to you” are very important. People may not remember each time you say these phrases but they will remember when you don’t.
